18: The Moon

The Moon card deals with anxiety and fear and the release of inner demons as well as mystery and illusion. I feel a deep connection to the aspects of this card so it was serendipitous that I should be chosen for this one in particular. My interpretation focuses on the mystery and journey into the unknown. My work in general has at its core a dreamlike narrative and through my paintings I contemplate the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. The anthropomorphic qualities of my characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits. So in my depiction of the Moon card the wolves aren’t separate from the Moon they are connected to her through the tangle of vines sprouting from her mind and plunging into the waters of the subconscious below. The moon has a dark aspect depicted by the snarling animal in her keyhole belly but at the same time she is holding a sleeping bunny doll which for me is a symbol of safety and protection. The journey into the night is fraught with danger but beyond the dark path and out of the deep pools there is a golden horizon, lending assurance to the wanderer that the journey is worth the risks involved.
