Aaron Thell Smith

"Cautionary Tales"

September 5 - 28, 1997

Working in the painstaking manner of the 17th Century masters who inspire him, California artist Aaron Thell Smith has depicted social outcasts as modern saints. Using contemporary models, he has reinterpreted characters from cautionary verse written for children during the Victorian era. Through a dark sensibility and subtle conceptual shifts, Smith has transformed the misbehaving children of the nursery rhymes into solitary, ascetic hermits on a strange spiritual quest. A graduate, and teacher at Art Center College of Design, the artist now passes on his enthusiasm for figurative painting to his students. This is his third solo show with La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
