The Pizz

"Poison Eye Candy For Rotten Children"

July 4 - 27, 1997

For his fourth show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, on the fourth of July, we proudly present to you the superfine art of smog-tinged, So-Cal art hero, The Pizz. Self-taught, self-employed and self-destructive, our boy Pizz has held a key position in the west coast underground art scene since the early '80s. He grew out of a club called "The Art Boys" which among others included famed painters Robert Williams, Gary Panter, and Matt Groening and led the artist to a two year stint at Rip Magazine, drawing the Rat Fink comic strip. While other artists were constantly moving more toward illustrative work, Pizz courageously committed to the fine arts of oil and acrylic and a sphere without boundaries for his brilliant imagination. His paintings have always been very accessible as well as marketable (we've hosted the sold out shows to prove it), because he starts with such broad, traditional themes, but then of course tweaks them out into a very different perspective. His new exhibit is an incredible collection of lowbrow masterpieces illustrating some of the finest technique around. Pizz uses a traditional "desert chrome"method for his dark and gloomy backgrounds and has perfected a backwards, chiaroscuro, black velvet technique to create such depth that the pieces seem to glow. He simply wants to convey an alternate reality with paint and brush, but it is the skill with which he does this that is anything but simplistic. The Pizz is a sentimental favorite of La Luz de Jesus.
