Beth Love

"Veiling and Unveiling: A Peekaboo Picnic With Mortality"

June 5 - 28, 1998

La Luz de Jesus is proud to introduce to you the traumatically askew paintings of American self-taught artist, Beth Love. Love paints what would have to be called schizphrenic landscapes. How she paints a sky or valley shows the dedication of a true artisan, but the images of corrupt beauty in those landscapes shows a violence and horror that is admittedly impossible to take your eyes off of. Love uses saccharine sweet cliches to lure the viewer, in the same way a kidnapper uses sweet candy, into facing the cruelty of our world or of our own impulses, personal horrors that we refuse to pick up and scrutinize. The artist grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment", a description Love beleives to be far too shallow and insipid, a region where violence and injustice has infiltrated, just like violent imagery infiltrates her otherwise peaceful settings. " Sentiment is pretty," says Love, "but I love to spit in its face." We encourage you to come take a look at the Los Angeles debut of the Beth Love experience; thought provoking, morally debatable, but mysteriously beautiful oil paintings.
