Tony Fitzpatrick

"Prints from 1989 - 1999"

September 3 - 26, 1999

La Luz de Jesus Gallery is honored to bring you a new collection of prints by Tony Fitzpatrick from the years 1989 to 1999. The collection is exclusively etchings; his most biographical work to date. As his parents, he was born in Chicago's south side neighborhood some 40 years ago. Tony offers a visual translation of a verbal narrative passed from father to son, of a way of life in a very special place. It is poetry in art, a collaboration of two storytellers, and a record of an invaluable personal legacy. Images in the etchings are from places and characters brought to life through the eyes of Tony's father. The stories include Cubs Park legends; The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, and the tales of Capone's henchmen. His father used to take him along on his salesman routes, passing through Chicago's cruel stockyards and Bum Town, a neighborhood on the far southeast side of town that his father saw as a metaphor for the great and rightful place of Chicago. The characters of his drawings are rooted in the real, and altered by their existence in the intersection of the minds of the artist and father. They are a fusion of the powerful emotion of grief, (Tony's father passed away last year), the miracle of imagination, and the skill of the hand. Tony Fitzpatrick's work is honest and his technique as accomplished as it is original. We at La Luz De Jesus feel very privileged to exhibit the work of this fine artist, and it is our extreme pleasure to showcase drawings with such meaning and integrity.
