SHAG

"Party Crashers"

JANUARY 8 - JANUARY 31
, 1999

Josh Agle, better known as Shag, is a painter with a particular taste for exotica, early sixties guitar instrumentals, and vintage movie and television themes. Also an avid tiki collector, Shag's love for tikis and primitive art has helped define a distinct style which is quickly becoming recognizable as "Shag Art." The themes of his paintings are based on vintage sources and ideas, yet his sharp, illustrative approach is unmistakably his own. the artist is intrigued mostly with the period between 1958 and 1966; its music, fashions, advertising, and celebrities. Shag's work is always characterized by a level of craftsmanship and cleanliness uncommon in most visual art today, heavily influenced by graphic designer Saul Bass and cartoonist Gene Deitch. His fondness for these particular graphic techniques led him to a very successful illutrating career in the music industry, with clients like Geffen Records, and titles that range from Les Baxter to the Sex Pistols. But it is the Shag paintings which have secured him the most notoriety. His pieces are on exhibit in Germany, Spain, Sweden, and Australia this year alone. The last Shag show with us was an unprecedented sell out and we expect nothing less for his show here this January.
