Brian O'Connor

"Welcome To Sugarland"

June 2 - 26, 2000

Brian O'Connor is a native New Mexican who grew up in Albuquerque with his school teacher parents. He graduated from Del Norte High School in '76 and attended the University of New Mexico on a wrestling scholarship. After two years he transferred to Centro Andino in Quito, Ecuador. During his year in South America he began to seriously make art and continued to do so during the two years of traveling and working throughout the western United States that followed. He returned to UNM and graduated in 1980 with a BFA. Since graduating he has shown in galleries in Santa Fe, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami and New York.

"The search for "Sugarland" leads down the King's Highway, through places where 'the simple life is neither given nor yet earned.'* We wrestle with our circumstances, with our consciences, with our possessions, with each other. It is a clumsy contest, with sadness and humor. And sometimes it is graceful and beautiful, like dancing."
