Glenn Barr

"Beneath the Valley of the Brain"

May 4 - 27, 2001

La Luz de Jesus is proud to present the L.A. debut of Glenn Barr, one of Detroit's most celebrated and successful underground artists. His paintings have appeared in galleries from Seattle and San Francisco to New York City. Glenn's work has been featured in a variety of comics and graphic novels such as Mad, DC Comics and Paradox Press as well as in a series of self published books called HEEP. Barr's contribution to animation include background styling for The Ren and Stimpy Show, Bjork's I Miss You video and The New Woody Woodpecker Show. Barr's paintings have been reproduced in art journals like Juxtapoz, Juxtapoz Erotica and Film Threat magazine.
Worlds converge in Barr's soulfully voyeuristic and subliminally strange imagery as his scintillating visions transpire in scenes taken from subversive underworlds and apocalyptic horizons. The interiors are adorned with desembodied cherubs, morally bankrupt babes and vixens from the darker realm of the spiriitual world. Alongside these kinky inner sanctums, Barr presents views ofthe urban landscape as a post-industrial world that could never be or perhaps as a vision of the post-nuclear future soon to come. Be it femme fatales or otherworldly scenarios his visuals just might prove him to be this generation's ultimate erotic/surrealist painter. As one critic penned, "Barr's work is the visual equivalent of a David Lynch film."
