The Clayton Brothers
"Green Pastures"
December 7 - 28, 2001

Over twenty years ago Tommy Bauman gave his friends Rob & Christian Clayton a school photo with the words "Tim House" and his phone number written on the back. Was the place where Tommy's parents sent him to live called Tim House or was this just a simple boy's simple mistake? The The Clayton Brothers never bothered to ask but years later that single moment has come full circle in their current body of work, "Green Pastures." At the center of the show sits Tim House, a place where everyone is welcome, even embraced. Nothing is ugly or wrong inside Tim House. No one is rejected. Its inhabitants, be they outsiders, do-gooders, criminals or geniuses, all find a home within its four walls. The paintings surrounding Tim House form a landscape of visual stories addressing the universal questions of life. Truth or Fiction? Right or Wrong? Beautiful or Hideous? Simple of Profound? These are not necessarily Tommy's stories or even the Clayton Brothers' stories. They are a word here, a color there, the look in a stranger's eye. They're like a well worn book that's been torn up and reassembled into something new and different. They're the shared stories at the core of humanity - identity, beauty, honor, dignity - the struggle each of us goes through to define and create our own narrative; our own landscape. And at the center of it all sits Tim House, a constant reminder that there are no right answers. It's all just a matter of perspective, and every view is unique. The Clayton Brothers invite you to take a walk through Green Pastures and step inside Tim House. Have a seat. Sing a song. Answer your own questions. Create your own story. Everyone is welcome here. The Clayton Brothers grew up in Denver, Colorado. They attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and currently live in the Los Angeles area. While they've both shown individually at La Luz de Jesus, "Green Pastures" is their first entirely collaborative exhibit. |
