La
Luz De Jesus welcomes back, the inimitable Shag, international art sensation,
darling of the jet set and man-about-town, for our fourth annual exhibition
of his paintings. Ever since his very first one-person show, which was
at La Luz de Jesus in 1998, Shag has been a stunning success: his paintings
sell out the night his shows open, and we maintain a waiting list of
eager buyers. This time around, the subject of the show is Sin, as only
Shag can paint it. Shag's alter ego and secret identity is the mild
mannered illustrator and painter Josh Agle, former guitarist with the
Tiki Tones. His richly hued paintings depict a retro world in which
swingers, Shriners, hep cats, jazz fans and wasp-waisted women mingle
with the likes of Robert Mitchum, Sammy Davis, Jr. and the occasional
minotaur, cricket or wolf. All this action takes place in swank tiki
lounges and suburban living rooms, decked out with the sharpest fifties
and sixties modern furnishings. His subject matter, pared-down compositions
and sharp-edged painting style are inspired by the work of the great
illustrators of the fifties and sixties, artist like Gene Dietch and
Jim Flora.
