KOZIK

"Desperate Measures, Empty Pleasures"

February 1 - 24, 2002

Credited with single handedly reviving the "lost" art of the concert poster (as pioneered by the psychedelic rock posters of the '60s), Kozik is a self taught technical wizard who has raised the craft of silkscreen printing to new heights. Born in Madrid in 1962, he came to the US at age 15, and moved to Austin, Texas in 1981. His creative career grew largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin's burgeoning, underground alternative rock scene. His designs for friends in bands led to his winning the Austin Chronicle Readers' Poll "Best Graphic Artist" award in both '87 and '88. Thanks to his growing technical expertise, he has been able to parlay this acclaim into the San Francisco based Man's Ruin, a graphic design company.

From the start, Kozik's art has given visual expression to the icon-toppling message of punk and alternative rock. Appropriating the symbols of '50s Americana - Toon Town heroes, the Cleavers, the smiling housewives of advertising kitsch - he subverts their myth, in Technicolor, by bringing its star players into the poster world as drunks, deviants and criminals (or were they like that already?) These jarring images brought Kozik national and international recognition with the exhibition of his work in innumerable solo and group gallery shows worldwide.

Feature articles in Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Spin and Details magazine have cemented Kozik's reputation as rock's number-one artist. A collection of his poster work was exhibited at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1998 his work was included in the Smithsonian Institute. He has three books of his work published by Last Gasp Publications and has designed for mainstream organizations as Nike, Gatorade, and the Lincoln Center.
