Michael L. Teague

"Monsters, Neurosis and the Sublime"

June 7 - 30, 2002

Born in Northeast Arkansas and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Michael Teague's discovery of comic books, bubble gum cards, Ed Roth and Basil Wolverton has a lasting effect on his artistic development. Initially pursuing a career in musical composition, Michael switched to Fine Arts finishing two degrees in painting. After completing his MFA at Indiana University he returned to his earlier interest in making comix. Teague's comix, which feature characters such as Cancer Patch Bunny, the Flying Kneadable, Eraser Elephant and, Michael's alter ego, Disco John, often blend Nietzchean themes with toilet humor. His comic book Epic Dermis won the Xeric Foundation Grant in 1999. Teague's surreal world consists of monsters from his childhood. They inspire him to paint "...now I am reduced to chasing their shadows with paint brushes. Perhaps that is the curse of getting older: you begin to chase your monsters more than they chase you."
