Abandonment, adoption, large families, drugs, alcohol, prison, boredom, and risk all inspire the art of the Eichelberger Twins. Born in San Diego in 1966, they were given up for adoption and taken in by Bob and Ruth Eichelberger (who eventually ended up with a brood of 15 children). Their teenage years were spent getting kicked out of school, doing drugs, drinking and raising hell. Although a stint in a Mexican prison straightened Brice out good and proper, Bruce spent a good part of his life in the California prison system where he developed simple drawing techniques. Bruce shared his knowledge with Brice and the two have been dedicating their time to their craft ever since. Recently, they were both featured in the 2003 Uncommercial Art by Commercial Art show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery where their pieces sold out before the exhibit’s official opening. Although the two brother’s styles of art dramatically different from each other (Brice creates whimsical, naïve works while Bruce’s creations are elaborate, moody, pencil drawings) the two self-taught artists work hard every day to bring people works they can enjoy. This is their new purpose – and it seems to be keeping them out of trouble! |
