Dast

May 2 - June 1, 2003

Born in Vicenza (Italy) in 1966, Dast began his artistic career while studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti, experimenting with several forms of expression ranging from painting to comic strips and body art performances. In the second half of the nineties his name began to circulate in underground circles following the publication of comic strips and illustrations in publications such as Delirio, Bad Mutants, Impulse Comix, Dynamo, Interzona, Rumore, Mondo Bizzarro Mag. (Ita), Malefact and Panik (USA), Stripburger (Slovenia), and in the book Tatto Comix. He is the co-author of the book Horrorgasmo (Mondo Bizzarro Press, 1999). In 2001 he held a solo exhibition at the Mondo Bizzarro Gallery which coincided with the publication of "The Hell Inside Me," a collection of his paintings presented by the art critic Alessandro Riva. In May 2002 Dast exhibited at MiArt, the modern and contemporary art fair in Milan. His work is rich in detail and symbolism which recalls medieval sacred art seen from an underground comic perspective. Dast's paintings are populated by damned souls, infernal monsters, foetuses with crutches, skulls with eyeballs and other monstrosities which inhabit the artist's unconscious.
