Considered one of America’s greatest historical artists, Mort Künstler has enjoyed an remarkable career creating paintings that educate and enrich the viewer’s understanding of some of the most important events in American history. Still a very active painter for movie posters, American postage stamps (his depiction of the Buffalo Soilders was use by the US Postal Service in 1994), and historical exhibitions across the nation, Mort Künstler was the primary illustrator for Magazine Management, the company that published more than a dozen adventure titles. In addition to his numerous commissioned works and gallery exhibitions, Künstler illustrated advertisements for General Electric, Texaco, and magazine covers for Mad, Boy’s Life, Newsweek, and True Detective.
In 1993 a television special entitled Images of the Civil War – The Paintings of Mort Künstler was broadcast on A&E showcasing Künstler’s contribution to the depiction of the Civil War. In 1999, Virginia’s Governor James Gilmore officially declared March 18th Mort Künstler Day.
