John Puglisi

"Hot August Art"

August 1 - 31, 2003

John Puglisi was born in a small town in northern New Jersey in 1969. As a child growing up with oil refineries and chemical plants in his backyard, John always dreamed of getting out. The idea of working in a factory on an assembly line was never an appealing proposition to him. After receiving a BFA in illustration from Pratt Institute in 1991, John headed west, away from the smokestack skylines to the palm trees and sunny skies of southern California. Since moving to Los Angeles, John has been working in the animation and film industries as a conceptual illustrator and storyboard artist. In his current paintings, John returns to his roots in the industrialized north New Jersey. He draws from memories of growing up there to create a backdrop upon which he can explore the relationship of the worker to the workplace. In the process, he has rediscovered within the factories, smokestacks, and turnpikes of New Jersey the harsh beauty of a place that he still calls home.
