SHAG

"The Twelve Stations of Ptolemy"

September 5 - 28, 2003

Born in 1962 in Sierra Madre, California, SHAG, the alter ego of illustrator and painter Josh Agle, grew up in Hawaii and Southern California. He received his BA in Fine Arts at Cal State Long Beach whre he was rigorously trained in classical drawing and painting. This instruction, along with his love for early '60s music, vintage album designs, and the illustrations of Gene Dietch and Jim Flora helped shaped the art of SHAG.

Since his first one-man show at La Luz de Jesus in 1998, Shag has met with phenomenal success. He has sold out exhibitions in the United States, Syndey Austrailia, and Japan. His collaborative work with designer Paul Frank inspired a line of purses, wallets, CD cases and bar stools which immediately sold out at his La Luz show in 2001. Shag has created a whole line of tiki mugs and lamps for Tiki Farm and has also illustrated various "grog logs" and date books. Shag was also responsible for almost every single aspect of design for Venus, a cocktail lounge/restaurant at the Venetian resort on the Las Vegas strip. Unfortunately, due to zealous "collectors" appropriating the menus, lobby displays, swizzle sticks, and napkins designed by SHAG, Venus was forced to redecorate with a less tempting motif. Since then he has designed three custom guitars in collaboration with Fender Custom Shop Master Builder, John English and has been invited to paint one of the first production re-issues of Richard Neutra's 1948 Boomerang Chair.

SHAG has been exhibiting his work at La Luz de Jesus gallery since 1996. "The Twelve Stations of Ptolemy" marks our sixth annual solo exhibition of his paintings.
