An illustrator by trade, Jordin Isip is an artist who, through his extensive body of work, has inadvertently become a sort of cultural archeologist. Using bits and pieces of fragmented daily life - both physical and mental - Isip crafts his multi-layered apparitions, creating what may be described as a series of visual time capsules. Isip scours the grimy streets of New York City, picking up deteriorating materials, litter, and "anything interesting" to incorporate into his work. His layering of these pieces upon a canvas, along with his own painted, elongated, totemic figures create somber narrative images for his audience. Currently teaching at Parson's School of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Rhode Island School of Design, Isip's work has appeared in numerous publications including, The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and Time Magazine. He has received numerous awards for illustration from American Illustration, Communication Arts, and The Society of Publication Designers and has shown his work in various galleries in the United States, Canada, and Italy. Although he has participated in several group shows at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, this exhibition marks Jordin Isip's first featured show at the gallery. |
