Craig LaRotonda
"Tyranny of the Flesh "

February 3-26, 2006

Craig LaRotonda studied with the internationally renowned illustrator Alan Cober, at The State University of New York at Buffalo where he received his B.F.A. in Art in 1992.  In the summer of 1997 Craig and artist, Kim Maria moved to Northern California.  LaRotonda’s background in painting and sculpture combined with Maria’s intimate assemblage and collage techniques naturally developed into a prolific collaboration.  As a result of their partnership, they formed Revelation Studios, a fine art and commercial studio located in San Francisco.

LaRotonda’s often-haunting figurative works are introspective and meditative interpretations of the human condition.  Applying what he calls ‘spiritual technology”, LaRotonda’s brushwork is meticulous and precise, recalling the Dutch and Flemish figurative paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries but most certainly contemporary. “My paintings explore the unspeakable nature of consciousness. Existence is much more than what we perceive with the five senses. I'm intrigued by the spaces in between, like the passage between life and death, which plays continuously in my work."

LaRotonda's artwork graces the walls of famous homes including collectors in France, Germany, Norway, Mexico, as well as a host of collectors in the U.S. His distinctive art appears published in 3 feature-length motion pictures including the Academy Award winning film Traffic (dir. Steven Soderbergh, starring Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones) through his relationship with Film Art LA as well as numerous publications such as Time Magazine, The Washington Post, The Village Voice, Juxtapoz and The NY Times.

His most recent exhibitions include solo shows at Limbo Fine Art in San Diego, CA and Anno DominiGallery in San Jose, CA. Group shows include work at Scope London with Ashley Gallery, Varnish Fine Art, 111 Minna Gallery, Roq la Rue, M Modern Gallery, Track 16 Gallery, Copro Nason Gallery, Skeleton ArtGallery, as well as a regular at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. This will be Criag LaRotonda's first solo show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
