Jordin Isip
People are the subject of Isip’s vivid and haunting paintings. Built up from scraps of litter, trash, discarded magazines, and all manner of New York City detritus, the works are as much about the process of making as they are about the narratives that they embody. Themes of allegory, personal experience, and obsession are communicated by means of a visual language that speaks to things both intimate and universal, to the specific and the symbolic. Simultaneously primitive and urban, Isip’s work revolves around the human condition--conflicted, chaotic, and insular. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Jordin has lived in Brooklyn, NY since graduating with a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited nationally in galleries in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, and abroad in Berlin, London, Manila, Paris and Rome. His art has been published in numerous magazines including Arkitip, The Atlantic Monthly, Juxtapoz, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Time. Jordin has also curated over a dozen group exhibitions including “Mystery Meat” at Future Prospects (Philippines), “Scab On My Brain” at Space 1026 (Philadelphia), and “A Piece Apart” at Aidan Savoy (NYC). He is currently teaching at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute.
